You may have noticed a few new flags adorning downtown’s streets. These flags of green, red, and black aren’t random; they were placed in honor of Juneteenth — a federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of all enslaved Black Americans — coming up this Sun., June 19.
If you’re curious about why Juneteenth is such an important holiday, we think that ArtsBuild’s James McKissic explains it far better than we ever could. You can also check out this “story of Juneteenth observance” recording from the Unity Group (the recording is passcode protected: use 1q+uB^t4).
If you’re looking for ways to celebrate + commemorate the holiday, check out these local events.

We were today years old when we learned that all of Good Dog’s cool salt + pepper shakers come from a trading system at the restaurant.
If you see a shaker set that you like (and there are a lot to like), bring in another to trade it out.
The result? A salt and pepper shaker stock that’s curated by Chattanoogans + unique to the restaurant.
