…but not in a bad way. We’re currently 10 days into Dry January — a campaign that encourages individuals to voluntarily live sober throughout the month — and listen, if you’ve voluntarily lived sober for approximately zero of those 10 days thus far, we get it.
Engaging with the sober curious movement opens the door to a slew of health, financial, and social benefits, but especially these days, it can be hard. That’s why we’re helping out those who choose not to booze this month with a variety of local non-alcoholic offerings, from mocktails to bar drink alternatives.

HHM CPAs provide expert accounting services for businesses + individuals | Photo by Casey Yoshida
Two words: Start now. If tax season overwhelms you (which is totally normal), here are 2 things to check off your list to get ahead of the game:
- Gather important documents in one place. W-2s, brokerage statements, etc. should be accounted for by mid-January.
- Compile other relevant information, like whether you sold property or started a business.
Want more help getting tax-ready? Work with a qualified CPA, like the tax professionals at HHM CPAs. 🧮*
Weather
- 46º | Sunny | 3% chance of rain ☀️
Opening
- Last week, we made an Instagram post showing what looked to be an almost completed (if not already completed) Milk & Honey. After that post, we got the scoop — Milk & Honey will officially reopen the newly-renovated space the week of Feb. 14. Who's excited?
- Here’s some peachy news. The Peach Cobbler Factory opens today at 11 a.m. with a celebratory ribbon cutting. Located on MLK Boulevard, the restaurant will serve banana pudding, cinnamon rolls, and a variety of cobblers. 🍑
Try This
- Point Park atop Lookout Mountain — part of Chickamauga + Chattanooga National Military Park — is waiving its entrance fee on Mon., Jan. 17 in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. From 11 a.m.-2 p.m., park rangers will provide programs about the park and the Battles for Chattanooga.
- Ok, yes, we just spieled about Dry January, but hey — bartenders gotta make a living (and this is pretty cool). Nearby meadery Flora De Mel is hosting a bartenders competition this Thursday, Jan. 13, for local bartenders to create their best cocktail with Flora De Mel mead + Chattanooga Whiskey. $15 will get you a spot on the judges panel.
Health
- Parkridge Health System + Erlanger Health System have recently updated their hospital visitation policies due to the heightened transmission of COVID-19. Both are limiting the number of visitors allowed and restricting hours of visitation. (WDEF)
- As COVID-19 continues to rise across the county, several local testing sites are struggling to meet the heightened demand. Access Family Pharmacy offers testing Monday-Friday, but is currently out of at-home test kits. Athena Esoterix recently opened a testing site on Signal Mountain Road to help meet testing demands. (NewsChannel 9)
State
- Tennessee State Parks is hosting the “My TN State Park” fundraiser throughout January, allowing Tennesseans to vote for their favorite state park with each dollar they donate. Over $15,000 has already been donated, and local Harrison Bay State Park leads in votes. Donations are accepted until Jan. 31. (WRCB)
Edu
- Many colleges + universities in the Chattanooga area are starting their spring semesters amid the region’s surge in COVID-19 cases. As of Jan. 7, most Chattanooga area colleges are encouraging, but not requiring, mask use. UTC is strongly encouraging mask use, and is requiring their use in select settings. (Chattanooga Times Free Press)
Arts
- ArtsBuild announced the five local artists receiving funding through the Racial Equity Grants for Individual Artists program — a grant program attempting to address funding inequities in the nonprofit arts sector. Pablo Mazariegos, Isela Arredondo, Kristina Sánchez-Mills, Jose Loza, and Samantha De Armas are artists whose works stretch across several mediums. (The Pulse)

Louisiana-based sports bar Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux is set to open in downtown Chattanooga next month.
The restaurant will be located at 224 Broad St. and feature Cajun-inspired cuisine + delicious-looking menu items like this “grown-up grilled cheese” with american, swiss, smoked gouda, parmesan, bacon, and marinara on rustic sourdough.
In the meantime, the spot is still in search of people to fill front of house and back of house positions ahead of its grand opening.

Editor's Pick: Ever since I moved to Chattanooga, I’ve loved Hoff Sauce (Switching from Louisiana to Hoff is a rite of passage to live here, I think). It wasn’t until recently, however, that I discovered Hoff’s “Mean Green” sauce. I know this quote is in reference to Frank’s hot sauce, but seriously — I put that sh*t on everything, from breakfast potatoes, to vegan eggs, to tacos. If you haven’t tried it out yet, I highly recommend.
