Answered: Reader Cherita R., (of Mad Priest Coffee Roasters fame) got back to us with some important information on helping with Chattanooga’s incoming refugees. She wrote:
“I’m on the board of Bridge, and given that Chattanooga is a small city, Bridge is actually the only refugee resettlement agency. And it’s SUPER important that volunteers actually go through the official volunteer process with Bridge. We can’t just have people coming to the airport to welcome people. Certain things like dropping donations, etc don’t require any training, but due to the sensitive nature of many refugees stories and their situations coming to the US (many of them are in danger for their lives and/or their families are in danger) Bridge has to vet volunteers that actually work directly with families through cultural orientations, background checks, etc. So I know it’s not necessarily as glamorous to have more “hoops to jump through” but it’s very important.”
Thanks, Cherita!
